چکیده

Based on the microscopic model including spin-orbit coupling, on-site Coulomb and Hund’s interactions, as well as crystal field effects, we have investigated magnetic and optical properties of Sr2IrO4. Taking into account all intermediate state multiplets generated by virtual hoppings of electrons, we calculated the isotropic, pseudodipolar, and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling constants, which describe the experiment quite well. The optical conductivity σ(ω) evaluated by the exact diagonalization method shows two peaks at ∼ 0.5 and ∼ 1.0 eV in agreement with experiment. The two peak structure of σ(ω) arises from the unusual Fano-type overlap between electron-hole continuum of the Jeff = 1/2 band and the intrasite spin-orbit exciton observed recently in Sr2IrO4.

Robustness of basal-plane antiferromagnetic order and the J(eff)=1/2 state in single-layer iridate spin-orbit Mott insulators.

The magnetic structure and electronic ground state of the layered perovskite Ba(2)IrO(4) have been investigated using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering. Our results are compared with those for Sr(2)IrO(4), for which we provide supplementary data on its magnetic structure. We find that the dominant, long-range antiferromagnetic order is remarkably similar in the two compounds and that the elect...

Crystal-field splitting and correlation effect on the electronic structure of A2IrO3.

The electronic structure of the honeycomb lattice iridates Na(2)IrO(3) and Li(2)IrO(3) has been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Crystal-field-split d-d excitations are resolved in the high-resolution RIXS spectra. In particular, the splitting due to noncubic crystal fields, derived from the splitting of j(eff)=3/2 states, is much smaller than the typical spin-orbi...

Twisted Hubbard model for Sr2IrO4: magnetism and possible high temperature superconductivity.

Sr(2)IrO(4) has been suggested as a Mott insulator from a single J(eff)=1/2 band, similar to the cuprates. However, this picture is complicated by the measured large magnetic anisotropy and ferromagnetism. Based on a careful mapping to the J(eff)=1/2 (pseudospin-1/2) space, we propose that the low energy electronic structure of Sr(2)IrO(4) can indeed be described by a SU(2) invariant pseudospin...

Confinement-deconfinement transition as an indication of spin-liquid-type behavior in Na(2)IrO(3).

We use ultrafast optical spectroscopy to observe binding of charged single-particle excitations (SE) in the magnetically frustrated Mott insulator Na(2)IrO(3). Above the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (T(N)) the system response is due to both Hubbard excitons (HE) and their constituent unpaired SE. The SE response becomes strongly suppressed immediately below T(N). We argue that this in...

Spin and Charge Fluctuations in Strongly Correlated Systems

Spin and charge are two fundamental degrees of freedom in strongly correlated electron systems. In this thesis we study low-energy effective theory and phase transitions of spin and charge in a variety of strongly correlated systems. First, we study effective theory of magnetic phase transition in Sp(4) spin system and iron-based superconductors. Quantum phase transitions beyond Landau paradigm...
